Newton Lady Eagles traveled to Pana on Tuesday night and came away with a convincing 61–37 road victory, using a fast start and steady defense to control the game from start to finish.
Newton jumped out early, taking a 19–11 lead after the first quarter and never looking back. The Lady Eagles matched that output in the second period, outscoring Pana 19–9 to carry a 38–20 advantage into halftime. Strong defense continued after the break as Newton held Pana to just four points in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Maddie Brummer led the Lady Eagles with a strong all-around performance, finishing with 16 points while also contributing six rebounds and three blocks. Allie Hermann added 14 points, including a three-pointer, and Grace Schumacher chipped in 11 points while running the offense with six assists. Claire Probst added eight points, and Newton’s balanced scoring kept Pana from gaining any momentum.
Defensively, Newton was active in the passing lanes, led by Alani Bergbower’s five steals. The Lady Eagles also won the battle on the boards and protected the rim, holding Pana to just nine field goals for the game.
With the win, Newton improves to 16–9 on the season and will return to action Thursday night when the Lady Eagles travel to Casey for a Little Illini Conference matchup.
