The Newton Lady Eagles will be traveling to Gillespie for softball sectionals after a win over Staunton in the Vandalia Regional Championship. The Lady Eagles won the game with a final score of 9-3.
Lady Eagles scored on a double by Ava Kessler in the first inning, a fielder’s choice by Camryn Martin in the second inning, and a groundout by Addy O’Dell in the second inning.
2022 Newton Lady Eagles knotted the game up at two in the bottom of the first inning, when Kessler doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
2022 Newton Lady Eagles pulled away for good with three runs in the second inning. In the second Savannah Billings induced Martin to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored and O’Dell grounded out, scoring one run.
2022 Newton Lady Eagles scored three runs in the fourth inning. The offensive firepower by 2022 Newton Lady Eagles was led by O’Dell, Allie Stanley, and Lexie Grove, all driving in runs in the inning.
Kayla “Kocher” took the win for 2022 Newton Lady Eagles. The righty surrendered three runs on six hits over seven innings, striking out one and walking one.
Billings took the loss for Staunton Lady Bulldogs Varsity. Billings went three innings, allowing six runs on six hits, striking out one and walking one.
2022 Newton Lady Eagles socked one home run on the day. Kessler went for the long ball in the third inning.
2022 Newton Lady Eagles totaled 11 hits. Kessler, Avery Mulvey, Lilly Kessler, and Grove each racked up multiple hits for 2022 Newton Lady Eagles. Grove, Kessler, Mulvey, and Kessler each collected two hits to lead 2022 Newton Lady Eagles.
Staunton Lady Bulldogs Varsity collected six hits. Whitney Weller and Taylor Nolan each had multiple hits for Staunton Lady Bulldogs Varsity.
