
Lady Eagles Sweep Vandalia, Improve to 13-10
The Newton Lady Eagles volleyball teams had a strong showing on Monday, September 30, sweeping all three levels against Vandalia on the road.
The freshman squad opened the evening with a hard-fought three-set win, taking the match 21-13, 19-21, 15-5. Junior varsity followed with a straight-set victory, 25-20 and 25-21, before varsity closed the night in dominant fashion, defeating the Vandals 25-16, 25-15.
With the victory, the Lady Eagles varsity improves to 13-10 on the season.
Senior outside hitter Hydi Bierman led the attack, tallying 7 kills and 3 service aces. Senior middle hitter Joslynn Pitcher added 5 kills, while sophomore Stella Schackmann, junior Allie Hermann, and junior Claire Probst each put down 4 kills apiece. Junior setter Amy Shull distributed 11 assists, while sophomore Maleah Miller added 7 and sophomore Emma Brooks chipped in 4.
Defensively, libero Morgan Schafer led the back row with 12 digs. Hermann added 9 digs, with Bierman collecting 5. Several others contributed, including Miller (4), Grace Schumacher (3), Pitcher (3), Isabel Meinhart (2), Probst (2), Kenzie Holder (2), Shull (2), and Schackmann (1). At the net, Schackmann, Schumacher, and Pitcher each recorded a block.
The Lady Eagles return to action on Wednesday, October 2, at home against Robinson. The freshman match begins at 5:00 p.m., followed by JV at 6:00 and varsity at 7:00.
