Meet the Administrators: Kara Garner

Kara Garner has joined the administrative and nursing teams for JCCU1 as part-time principal and part time nurse for Ste. Marie Elementary School

Can you tell people who might not know you a little about yourself?

I grew up on a farm in Wayne county and truly was a “farm girl”. I now live in Olney, IL with my mother, kids and dogs Dixie, Lulu and Grizwald. I enjoy reading, cooking and spending time with my family.”

Family? ”

I have two kids. My son Holt is a junior at USI (University of Southern Indiana) majoring in history with a minor in film. My daughter, Taegan is a sophomore at USI and majoring in sociology with a minor in political science. Holt sings in the USI chamber choir and Taegan is a USI Screagle (screaming eagle) cheerleader. I also spend lots of time with my nieces Savannah, Prairie and nephew Owen.”

Education?
“I have a BS in communication disorders and sciences from Eastern Illinois University as well as a teaching certificate and MS in educational administration. I also have a degree from Illinois Eastern Community College in nursing and am a Registered nurse.”

What made you decide to go into education?
“My parents were both educators so I grew up in a house where education was a responsibility, an expectation and a way of life. I have worked in schools, hospitals, and home health but my heart has always been in education.”

What are some of the greatest strengths you feel our school District has?
“Jasper CUSD #1 is very lucky to have such a caring and involved staff and community. We are lucky to be big enough to offer lots of services and options for students but small enough to know each and every student.”

How have educational priorities changed since you began teaching?
“The priority remains the same “to put kids first” but how we do that has changed. Today we use technology for everything and our students are tech experts!”

What do you feel are the most important qualities of an educator and why?
“There are many important qualities of an educator but this year I would say flexibility is most important. WE all must be willing to change our plans and find new ways of doing things in today’s world.”
