Each Monday between now and the opening of Sister Act! we will highlight one of the seniors who will be taking the stage on March 26th through the 29th (7pm, 7pm, 7pm, and 2pm). This week we will be highlighting Elliott Kocher, the daughter of Leon Kocher and Jennifer Kocher who will be portraying Sister Mary Lazarus.
What musicals have you been in at NCHS and what characters/roles did you play?
During my time at NCHS, I have been in Sister Act, Newsies, Mamma Mia!, and Oklahoma!. Being part of these productions has allowed me to grow as a performer with every show. Each one challenged me in different ways, whether through dancing, acting, or working as part of a large ensemble.
What was your favorite musical and why?
My favorite musical was Newsies because of all the dancing, especially the tap numbers. The choreography was so high energy, and it pushed me to become a stronger dancer. I loved the excitement of the big production numbers and the way the cast fed off each other’s energy.
What scene in Sister Act is your favorite and why?
My favorite scene in Sister Act is “Sunday Morning Fever” because of everything going on at once. It’s funny, chaotic in the best way, and full of energy. There are so many small moments happening throughout the scene that make it entertaining every single time.
What are three things being in the musical has taught you, and how have you learned these?
Being in the musical has taught me how to have a strong work ethic, confidence, and how to work with others, even when it’s difficult. I learned work ethic by balancing long rehearsals with school and other responsibilities. I built confidence by stepping on stage and trusting myself. I learned teamwork because putting on a show requires everyone to cooperate and support each other, even when things get stressful.
What are two pieces of advice you would give young people who want to start performing in musicals at NCHS?
First, be confident in what you do and stop worrying about what other people think. If you love performing, go for it. Second, have as much fun as you can because it doesn’t last forever. Don’t take everything too seriously; enjoy the experience while you have it.
What qualities do you see exemplified in the adults who help put on this show that you will take with you as you leave NCHS, and how do they demonstrate these qualities?
The adults involved in this show demonstrate patience and dedication. They put in countless hours of hard work behind the scenes and don’t even get to perform. They constantly support us, guide us, and push us to be better. Their commitment to making every production successful is something I truly admire and will carry with me.
What about Sister Act is different from other musicals you have been in?
Sister Act is different from other musicals I’ve been in because it doesn’t revolve around a love interest. Instead, it focuses on friendship, growth, and finding your voice, which is a refreshing change. It also has so much enjoyable comedy that makes rehearsals and performances even more fun.
What will you miss the most once the final curtain closes on your NCHS musical career?
I will miss the people the most, the friendships and connections that were made. It became a group where I could tell the dumbest joke or talk about the worst day ever and know I had a support system. I’ll miss the late-night talks after practice and all the inside jokes made during certain scenes. The memories and the bond we built are something I’ll always be grateful for.
