Mulvey’s Walk-Off Homer Lifts NCHS Lady Eagles Over Gillespie in Extra-Inning Thriller
The NCHS Lady Eagles captured a thrilling 5-3 walk-off win over the Gillespie Lady Miners on Tuesday, thanks to late-game heroics from Avery Mulvey. With the game knotted at three in the bottom of the eighth, Mulvey launched a towering two-run homer to center field, sealing the dramatic victory for the Eagles.
Mulvey had a standout night at the plate, going 3-for-4. Her game-winning blast in the eighth followed singles in the second and seventh innings, capping off a performance that ignited the home crowd and delivered a statement win for Newton.
The Miners struck early, as Sadie Sholtis opened the scoring in the top of the first with a two-run homer to left field. Gillespie added to their lead in the fifth with a solo shot to center from Ava Parish, pushing their advantage to 3-0.
But the Eagles refused to go quietly. Allie Hermann sparked the comeback in the bottom of the seventh with a clutch RBI single down the left field line, tying the game at three. That set the stage for Mulvey’s heroics an inning later.
Amelia Collins earned the win for Newton with a gritty performance in the circle. The right-hander tossed all eight innings, allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out three and walking two.
On the other side, Sholtis shouldered the loss despite a strong outing. She pitched seven and two-thirds innings, giving up nine hits and five runs, striking out four and walking two.
Offensively, Alisson Stanley added two hits for Newton, while Addyson O’Dell anchored the defense with six putouts. The Eagles were flawless in the field, not committing a single error in the game.
For Gillespie, Sholtis, and Ava Rakers each recorded two hits, with Sholtis also driving in a pair of runs. The Miners also flashed leather with two double plays but couldn’t hold off Newton’s late surge.
The win marks a memorable moment in the Eagles’ season as they look to build on the momentum in the sectional championship on Friday night where they will face Columbia.
