Musical Monday: Emily Dion

Each Monday between now and the opening of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on March 26th we will be featuring Musical Monday. This week we will continue highlighting our NCHS Seniors who are casted in the 2020 NCHS Musical with Senior Emily Dion.

In Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Emily will portray a wife. Emily is the daughter of Tim and Lori Dion.

The following are Emily’s answers to the questionnaire we provided.

What musicals have you been in at NCHS and what characters/roles did you play?

I was in The Wizard of Oz as the munchkin barrister, The Sound of Music as Brigitta, The Music Man as a River City Kid, The Little Mermaid as a maid and a dancer, Thoroughly Modern Millie as a stenographer, Cinderella as a dancer, and Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat as a wife.

What was your favorite musical and why?

My favorite musical was The Sound of Music. I played the role of Brigitta, one of the seven VonTrapp children. It was a genuinely fun musical to be a part of.

What scene in Joseph is your favorite and why? (This does not have to be a scene you are in)

My favorite scene in Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat is “Close Every Door.” Even though I am not a part of that scene, Close Every Door is one of my absolute favorite songs from the musical, and I love listening to it.

What are three things being in the musical have taught you? and how have you learned these?

Being in the musical has taught me how to work with others and how to persevere through the hard times. You have to be able to maintain a positive attitude throughout the whole process, and you have to work well with the rest of the cast to be able to do so. It has also taught me that nothing good can come without hard work. Musical can be demanding, but performing the show after months of practice is so rewarding. It is a truly amazing feeling.

What are two pieces of advice you would give young people who want to start performing in musicals at NCHS?

Two pieces of advice I would give to young people looking to perform at NCHS would be to try it out and to go for the bigger roles. Musical can be really fun, and if you want to be a lead role, then go for it. If you go for a lead role, then it will show that you are willing to do anything.

What qualities do you see exemplified in the adults who help put on this show that you will take with you as you leave NCHS and how do they demonstrate these qualities?

One quality I would like to take away from the adults who help to put on our shows is hard work. The directors, pianist, costumers, set constructors, sound, lights, and pit all put in a lot of time and effort into making our productions a success, and that is very admirable of them.

What will you miss the most once the final curtain closes on your NCHS musical career?

The thing I will miss most about being in the musical is being able to spend time with the friends I have made throughout my experience. Musical is a lot of time and effort, and it would not have been worth it if it wasn’t for them.

Opening Night for the NCHS musical will be March 26th at 7pm. Performances will also be held on March 27th at 7pm, March 28th at 7pm and March 29th at 2 pm.
