New Board Members Sworn In: Minutes for May School Board Meeting

Following is a summary of minutes of a regular meeting of the Board of Education of Jasper County Community Unit School District No. 1 held on Monday, May 15th, 2023 at 609 South Lafayette Street.  Board members present were Mrs. Mandy Rieman, Mrs. Holly Farley, Mr. Bill Meinhart, Mrs. Mandi Utley, Mr. Brady Shull, and Mr. Jason Kuhl.  

All votes are considered unanimous unless otherwise noted.

Mandy Rieman called the meeting to order.

Agenda was approved as presented. 

Mandy asked for Recognition of Guests and Public Comments. 

There was 1 FOIA request status report from the University of Kentucky requesting directory information for high school students.

Approval of the Consent Agenda as presented,

Regular Minutes and Closed Session Minutes for April 17th, 2023,

Bills and Payroll,

Presentment of monthly financial reports,

Lily Bierman as a volunteer for NCHS Color Guard,

 $350 from Athletic Boosters to Girls Basketball for OCC Shootout,

$1,000 from Embarras River Tourism Council for the Musical,

$6,835 from various Business and Parents for Post Prom,

Approval of Disposition of Surplus 28 Scholastic Bowl Team Shirts from NCHS,

Approval of Disposition of Surplus staff resource books and DVDs from Newton Elementary,

Approval of Disposition of Surplus Technology items,

Acceptance of the Canvass Results from Election Authority Amy Tarr, 

Oath of Office by newly elected Board Members:  Bill Meinhart, Mandi Utley, David Blecha, and Jackie Schackmann,

Joe Sornberger called the meeting to order.

Mandy Rieman was appointed as President Pro-Tempore of the Board of Education.

Holly Farley was appointed as secretary pro-tempore of the Board of Education.

Mandy Rieman was voted as President.

Bill Meinhart was voted as Vice President.

Holly Farley was voted as Secretary.

Misty Heath was voted as Treasurer.

Jennifer Maxon was voted as Recording Secretary.

Approval of the regular board of education meetings on the third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Board of Education and Administration Office at 1401 Clayton Avenue, Newton, Illinois 62448 for the 2023-2024 School Year.

Under the Superintendent’s Report, the IASB Joint Annual Conference in Chicago for the 2023-2024 School Year was discussed.  Mr. Sornberger presented a power point presentation on the Amended Fiscal Year 2023 Budget.  

Approval to establish Budget Hearing for FY 23 Amended Budget for June 19th, 2023 at 6:20 p.m.

Approval of Resolution Authorizing the Transfer of Real Property located at 213 South Cumberland in Willow Hill, and Approval of Intergovernmental Real Estate Sale Agreement with the Village of Willow Hill.

First Reading of Handbooks for Newton Community High School, Jasper County Junior High, Newton Elementary School and Sainte Marie Elementary,

Approval of Lunch, Registration and Athletic fees Schedule for 2023-2024 School Year.  Breakfast and Lunch prices will increase by ten cents for students and adults.  Registration and Athletic fees will remain the same.

The board went into executive session at 7:25 p.m. for 1.5 ILCS 120/2 ( c ) ( 1 ) – To Consider Information Regarding Appointment, Employment or Dismissal of Individual Employees or Legal Counsel,

Approval to return to open session at 7:54 p.m.,

Approval of the Resolution Authorizing the Sale of Real Property located at 609 South Lafayette Street,

Approval of the resignation of Kristie Finely as NES Second Grade Teacher at the end of the 2022-2023 School Year,

Approval to accept the retirement of Anne Ochs as JCJH Special Education Teacher at the end of the 2022-2023 School Year,

Approval to employ Ellie Short as NCHS Mathematics Teacher for the 2023-2024 School Year,

Approval to employ Kylie Frichtl as NES Teacher for the 2023-2024 School Year,

Approval to employ Kristi Scarbrough as the NCHS FCA Sponsor for the 2023-2024 School Year,

Approval to employ Kelly Thomann as the JCJH Volleyball Assistant Coach for the 2023-2024 School Year,

Approval to employ Collin Smith as the JCJH Baseball Coach for the 2023-2024 School Year, 

Approval to employ Rob Overman and Tami Hetzer as Summer Help positions as of May 22, 2023,

Approval of maternity leave requests for Shelby Lohman, NES Paraprofessional, from September 15th, 2023 and return December 1st, 2023, and Brooke Overbeck, NES Paraprofessional, from August 14th, 2023 to November 3, 2023 and return on November 6th, 2023.

Approval to advertise for a JCJH Special Education Teacher position for the 2023-2024 school year, Newton Elementary Secretary position for the 2023-2024 school year, and two NES Paraprofessional Positions for the 2023-2024 school year.Meeting adjourned at 8:01 p.m.  Next regular board meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 19th, 2023 at 6:30 p.m. at the Board of Education Office located at 1401 Clayton Avenue.
