
Newton, IL – February 7, 2025 – The Newton Eagles fought hard but ultimately came up short in their varsity basketball game against Marshall, falling 51-42 in a competitive contest.
Game Recap
The Eagles started strong in the first quarter, outscoring Marshall 18-14. However, a tough second quarter saw them manage only six points to Marshall’s ten, leading to a tight halftime score. Newton struggled to regain momentum in the second half, scoring just 18 points combined in the third and fourth quarters, while Marshall steadily pulled away for the victory.
Team Performance
Newton’s scoring efforts were led by Hayden Mulvey, who contributed 19 points, including four three-pointers and three free throws. Kody Bergbower also had a solid performance with 16 points and five rebounds. Lance Volk added six points, while Jacob Oldham and Quincy Fulton chipped in with smaller contributions.
Marshall’s balanced scoring attack was led by Scott, who posted 18 points, supported by Delp with 10 and Pugh with 11. Their ability to capitalize on free throw opportunities (9-of-18 from the line) and control rebounds (29 total) played a crucial role in their win.
