The Newton Eagles soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 3-2 loss to the Effingham Flaming Hearts in the regional semifinals, but not before delivering a hard-fought performance that showcased the team’s determination, resilience and character.
Effingham opened the scoring on a free kick delivered to the far post and headed into the lower-left corner. Newton answered when Oliver Ochs connected on a header off a long throw-in from Henry Will, sending the teams into halftime tied at 1-1.
The Eagles came out strong in the second half, and Ochs struck again with another header off a Will long throw-in. His second goal gave Newton a 2-1 advantage with approximately 35 minutes remaining.
Effingham later evened the score at 2-2 after an inadvertent handball allowed a Flaming Hearts striker to turn and finish.
Neither team could find the winning goal in regulation, sending the contest into overtime. During the first 10-minute overtime period, Effingham took a 3-2 lead when a shot through traffic deflected past Newton goalkeeper Curtis Weber.
The Eagles refused to back down. Newton pushed forward throughout the second overtime period, creating multiple scoring opportunities in an effort to extend the season. However, the Effingham goalkeeper turned away each attempt, securing the 3-2 victory for the Flaming Hearts.
Despite the heartbreaking result, Newton’s coach praised the team’s ability to overcome adversity throughout the season.
“Soccer emulates life, as no heated competition is ever fair, and these Newton players showed that they can face adversity and will be prepared for what lies ahead,” the coach said.
The Eagles finished the season with an 11-6-4 record despite having just 16 players and navigating multiple setbacks along the way.
The loss also marked the end of the high school careers of four seniors: Brock Anderson, Henry Will, Lena Fehrenbacher and Holden Barthelemy.
The coach offered special recognition to the senior class, praising the leadership and perseverance the four players demonstrated throughout the season.
“For the four seniors—Brock Anderson, Henry Will, Lena Fehrenbacher, and Holden Barthelemy—on this night, you showed for sure that you will be successful in life,” the coach said. “You took a team of only 16 players to an 11-6-4 record. In a season with multiple setbacks, you never gave up and showed great fortitude even up until the last seconds of the match.”
The coach also noted that all four seniors have the potential to continue playing soccer at the collegiate level if they choose to pursue that opportunity.
“NCHS soccer team was lucky to have you, and this coach is thankful for the memories we made,” the coach said.
Although the Eagles’ season ended short of their ultimate goal, their 11-6-4 record and determined effort in the regional semifinals reflected a team that continued to compete through adversity until the final whistle.
