Quincy Fulton went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, but Newton Eagles Varsity 2025 came up just short in a 7-6 loss to Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Varsity Hatchets on Thursday.
Fulton singled in each of his three plate appearances and added two stolen bases, helping fuel a nine-hit effort for the Eagles. Reed Tharp added a strong performance from the nine spot, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, including a key double in the sixth inning that pulled Newton within one run.
Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first, capitalizing on two passed balls to score a pair of runs. Newton clawed back in the sixth, narrowing the gap to 5-4 after a defensive error scored two and Tharp’s double brought in another.
However, the Hatchets responded in the top of the seventh, reclaiming the lead for good. Wyatt Wetherell and Jackson Gurgel delivered back-to-back singles, and Branson Tingley was hit by a pitch—each play bringing in a run to make it 7-5.
Tingley picked up the win on the mound for the Hatchets, tossing 1.2 innings of one-run relief. Newton’s Nolen Cleaver took the loss, allowing three runs over 3.1 innings of work. Starter Logan Ochs struck out six but gave up four runs (two earned) in 3.2 innings.
Gurgel paced the Hatchets’ offense with a 4-for-5 performance from the leadoff spot. Morris and Bridges chipped in with two hits apiece, while Tingley showed discipline at the plate, drawing two of the team’s seven walks.
Despite the loss, Newton Eagles displayed resilience at the plate and on the bases. They’ll look to bounce back in their next matchup.
