NEWTON — A patient approach at the plate and a game-breaking sixth inning powered Newton past Mt. Carmel 13-6 on Thursday.
The Eagles turned a tight game into a comfortable win by erupting for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth, showcasing both discipline and timely hitting. Newton drew nine walks in the game and consistently put pressure on the basepaths, swiping eight stolen bases.
Quincy Fulton set the tone offensively, reaching base repeatedly and drawing three walks while scoring three times. Newton finished with 11 hits, with Drake Wolf leading the way with a perfect 3-for-3 performance that included two RBIs.
Newton got on the board early in the first inning when Wolf delivered a single to score a run. Mt. Carmel answered in the second, putting together a four-run inning behind extra-base hits from Keegan Linson and Ryder Sloss to take a 4-1 lead.
The Eagles chipped away and regained control in the fourth inning, highlighted by Reed Tharp swiping home as part of a two-run frame to put Newton back in front.
Then came the decisive sixth.
Fulton started the rally with a double, and the Eagles never let up. Dominic Baltzell drove in two runs with a single, Dexter Fulton added a two-run double, and Maddox Horner contributed with a sacrifice fly as Newton piled up eight runs to break the game open.
On the mound, Eli Wolf earned the win, going four innings while striking out four. Chance Mulvey came on in relief to secure the save over the final three innings.
Mt. Carmel added two runs in the seventh on a home run from Sloss, but the damage had already been done.
Newton’s aggressive baserunning and patient plate approach proved to be the difference, as the Eagles controlled the tempo late to seal the win.
