The Newton Eagles girls tennis team earned a 5-4 victory over Olney after splitting the singles competition and doubles matches in a tightly contested meet.
Newton built an early advantage in singles, winning four of six matches.
At No. 1 singles, Olivia Sornberger turned in a dominant performance, defeating Olney’s Piper Berger 6-1, 6-2.
Beth Brocious battled through a three-set thriller at No. 2 singles. Brocious took the opening set against Ezha Biyok 6-2, but Biyok answered by winning the second-set tiebreaker 7-6 (3). Brocious then prevailed in the deciding super tiebreaker 10-8.
At No. 3 singles, Scarlett Collins cruised past Petra Zerkle 6-1, 6-1, while Emma Walker earned another Newton victory at No. 6. Walker won a tight opening-set tiebreaker against Claire Steele 7-6 (5) before closing out the match with a 6-1 second set.
Olney picked up victories at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Ryen Gray defeated Newton’s Jenna Hall 6-4, 6-2, while Adrienne Weidner defeated Jordyn Kocher 6-4, 6-1.
With Newton holding a 4-2 singles advantage, the match moved to doubles with the Eagles needing one victory to secure the overall meet.
Newton’s No. 2 doubles team of Sornberger and Hall delivered that crucial point, defeating Olney’s Ezha Biyok and Adrienne Weidner in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (3).
The No. 1 doubles match was another hard-fought battle. Newton’s Collins and Brocious won the opening set against Olney’s Piper Berger and Ryen Gray 6-1, but the Olney duo rallied to take the second set 7-5 and then edged Newton 10-8 in the deciding super tiebreaker.
Olney also claimed the No. 3 doubles match against Newton’s Lexi Ochs and Riley Rauch. The available match results did not include a score for that contest.
Newton ultimately held on for the 5-4 overall victory, taking four of six singles matches and one of three doubles matches.
