Newton Girls Track and Field Takes Second Behind Teutopolis in Tri-Meet

The Newton Lady Eagles track and field team put together a strong showing at a tri-meet against Teutopolis and Robinson, finishing second with 64 points, behind Teutopolis’ 78. Robinson placed third with 41 points. Newton saw contributions from veterans and underclassmen alike, earning wins in several events and showing impressive depth across the board.

Sprint Success and Relay Dominance

In the sprint events, Lena Fehrenbacher (6th, 14.0 SR), Brenly Francis (7th, 14.0 PR), and Ava Duncan (8th, 14.1 PR) led a tightly packed Newton group in the 100 meters. Grace Schumacher (28.6 PR) and Fehrenbacher (29.8 SR) placed 5th and 6th in the 200 meters.

In the 400 meters, freshman Avery Geier took the win with a personal record of 1:06.0, backed by Maleah Miller (5th), Madison Keller (7th), and Leila Tsunekawa (8th PR), showing Newton’s depth in the mid-distance sprint.

The Lady Eagles were especially strong in the relays:

  • 1st place in the 4x200m (1:53.0) behind a standout squad of Francis, Makayla McVicar, Morgan Schafer, and Schumacher.
  • 1st place in the 4x800m (11:35.4) with Layna Marshall, Lily Yager, Shay Bennett, and Yurieth Zavala.
  • 2nd place finishes in both the 4x100m (54.4) and 4x400m (4:47.7), demonstrating consistent team strength.

Distance and Hurdles

In the distance events, Zavala was runner-up in the 1600m (6:57.8 PR), and Marshall (2:45.5) and Yager (3:00.0) led the Eagles in the 800m.

Hurdles brought more success, with Karasyn Martin finishing 2nd in the 100m hurdles (18.2) and Zoey Michl taking 2nd in the 300m hurdles with a PR of 59.5.

Field Events Deliver Big Points

Newton excelled in the field, especially in the throws:

  • Ava Duncan placed 2nd in shot put with a PR of 30′ 6″, followed closely by Ava Earnest (3rd) and Shay Bennett (5th).
  • Freshman Maddie Brummer won the discus with a throw of 92′ 6″, while Bennett followed in 2nd with a PR of 89′ 3″.

The pole vault was a highlight, with Karasyn Martin winning at 11′ 0″ and Camryn Martin finishing 2nd at 10′ 6″. Newton also secured top-five finishes in the high jump, long jump, and triple jump, led by Isabel Meinhart and Audrey Beals.
