The Newton Eagles turned in a dominant second-half performance Friday night, pulling away from Casey-Westfield for a 42-14 victory on September 4.
Newton led 7-0 after one quarter and carried a 14-7 advantage into halftime before exploding for 14 points in the third quarter and another 14 in the fourth. The Eagles finished with 359 yards of total offense, compared with 279 for Casey-Westfield.
Newton quarterback Hayden Mulvey directed an efficient offensive attack, completing 11 of 26 passes for 211 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed twice for 17 yards. Mulvey connected with several different receivers, with Quincy Fulton leading the way with eight receptions for 158 yards and a touchdown.
Fulton was also a major factor on the ground, rushing four times for 34 yards and scoring three touchdowns. His biggest play came in the first quarter when he turned a reception into a 67-yard touchdown, giving Newton its first score of the night. Fulton later added touchdown runs of two and six yards.
Maddox Horner provided another big offensive punch. Horner carried the ball 10 times for 58 yards and two touchdowns, including touchdown runs of 25 yards in both the third and fourth quarters. He also caught one pass for 25 yards and a touchdown.
Eli Wolf contributed 22 receiving yards and a 16-yard touchdown reception. He also made an impact on special teams with two punt returns for 30 yards.
Newton’s offense produced 124 rushing yards and 235 passing yards, totaled 14 first downs and averaged nearly 6.1 yards per offensive play. The Eagles completed 12 of 28 passes overall and had no interceptions.
The Newton defense was equally impressive, forcing four interceptions and recovering one fumble. Eli Wolf, Henry Will and Parker Harris each recorded interceptions, while William Michl recovered a fumble. The Eagles also recorded seven tackles for loss and one sack.
Casey-Westfield’s offense was led by Jett Self, who completed 3 of 4 passes for 66 yards and a touchdown while also catching six passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Carter Stinson completed 9 of 20 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown, but was intercepted three times.
Newton’s special teams were solid as well. Henry Will was a perfect 6-for-6 on extra points and handled all three Newton punts, averaging 29.3 yards. Will also recorded an interception on defense.
Newton controlled the game statistically, holding a 24:43 to 23:17 advantage in time of possession and converting 4 of 11 third downs. The Eagles’ balanced attack and opportunistic defense allowed them to steadily pull away after halftime.
