The Newton Eagles tennis team picked up an 8-1 victory over Charleston, sweeping all six singles matches and winning two of three doubles matches.
Newton dominated singles play from the opening match. At No. 1 singles, Olivia Sornberger defeated Charleston’s Raylin Cox 6-1, 6-0. Beth Brocious followed with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Victoria Lim at No. 2.
At No. 3 singles, Scarlett Collins defeated Abigail Davidson 6-0, 6-1, while Jenna Hall blanked Ella Viertel 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4.
Lexi Ochs continued Newton’s singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Riley Shannon at No. 5. Riley Rauch completed the sweep at No. 6, defeating Kelsey Bryan 6-0, 6-3.
Charleston earned its lone team point at No. 1 doubles. Cox and Lim defeated Newton’s Brocious and Collins 6-3, 6-7 (4), 10-5 in a competitive match.
Newton responded by taking the final two doubles matches. Sornberger and Hall defeated Davidson and Viertel 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles, while Jordyn Kocher and Emma Walker closed out the meet with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Shannon and Bryan at No. 3.
The victory improved Newton’s record to 9-3.
Newton also faced Casey (C.-Westfield) [Coop] on September 24, defeating Casey 8-1. Newton combined five singles victories with a sweep of all three doubles matches in that meet.
At No. 1 singles, Sornberger defeated Casey’s Daisy Mumford 6-2, 6-1. Casey earned its lone point at No. 2 singles when Gracie Taylor defeated Brocious 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (9).
Newton received additional singles victories from Collins and Hall, while the Eagles swept all three doubles matches. Collins and Brocious defeated Ella Whitacre and Mumford 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Sornberger and Hall won No. 2 doubles 6-4, 6-1, and Lexi Ochs and Riley Rauch completed the sweep at No. 3 with a 6-4, 7-5 victory.
