The Newton Eagles girls’ tennis team battled hard but came up short against Salem, dropping a 7-2 decision on Thursday.
In singles play, Olivia Sornberger and Scarlett Collins earned Newton’s two victories. Sornberger delivered a strong performance at the No. 2 spot, defeating Madison Keserauskis 8-2. Collins also came through in a close match at No. 5 singles, outlasting Salem’s Abbi Patrick 8-6.
Newton’s other singles competitors fought tough battles but couldn’t pull out wins. Jailyn Hall fell 8-2 at No. 1, Lauren Gier dropped an 8-0 match at No. 3, Jenna Hall came up short 8-3 at No. 4, and Beth Brocious narrowly lost a tight 8-6 contest at No. 6.
In doubles play, Salem swept all three courts. The No. 1 duo of Jailyn Hall and Sornberger pushed early but ultimately fell 8-3. At No. 2 doubles, Izzy Probst and Emma Walker were defeated 8-0, while the No. 3 team of Jenna Hall and Collins dropped an 8-2 match.
Despite the loss, the Eagles showed resilience and fight throughout the lineup. Newton will look to regroup and build momentum heading into their upcoming matches.
