
Newton Track and Field Shines at Multi-Team Meet
Newton High School’s track and field teams gave a strong showing during a highly competitive meet that featured eight area schools, with both the boys and girls teams finishing near the top of the standings.

- Boys Varsity: 2nd place – 98 points
- Girls Varsity: 3rd place – 105 points
While Olney (Richland County) led both divisions with commanding scores, Newton’s athletes delivered impressive individual performances, personal records (PRs), and podium finishes across the board.
Boys Varsity Highlights
Top Performances
- 800m: Hayden Borgic claimed silver with a strong 2:01.78.
- Hurdles: Owen Schackmann took 2nd in both the 110m (16.41) and 300m (42.88).
- Pole Vault: Wade Wickham captured 1st at 11-06.00, with freshman Evan Holder right behind at 11-00.00.
- 4x800m Relay: Newton’s team of Sornberger, Harris, Whitaker, and Borgic clinched 1st with a time of 8:54.78.
- Triple Jump: Owen Schackmann jumped 11.63m for a 3rd place finish.
- Discus: Senior Wade Wickham threw a personal best of 133-07 to place 4th.
- 4x100m Relay: The team of Anderson, Haskett, Fulton, and Zumbahlen placed 2nd with a swift 44.72.
Other Notable PRs
- Quincy Fulton ran a personal best 23.45 in the 200m for 4th place.
- Dominic Baltzell threw a personal best 43-01.50 in shot put.
- Grayson Lingafelter posted a PR in the 300m hurdles (48.57).
Girls Varsity Highlights
Top Performances
- Pole Vault: Camryn Martin and Karasyn Martin tied for 1st, both clearing 11-03.00 (PR for Camryn).
- Triple Jump: Sydney Kinder leaped to 2nd with a PR of 10.91m.
- 4x200m Relay: The squad of McVicar, Schafer, Francis, and Schackmann brought home 1st place in 1:51.10.
- 100m Dash: Freshman Stella Schackmann sprinted to 3rd place in 12.93.
- 4x100m Relay: Newton finished 2nd behind strong runs by McVicar, Schafer, Fehrenbacher, and Kinder.
- 400m: Senior Sydney Kinder set a new PR (1:01.85) to earn 3rd place.
Other Strong Showings
- Layna Marshall ran well in the 1600m (5th) and 3200m (3rd).
- Morgan Schafer secured PRs in both the 100m hurdles (17.57) and 300m hurdles (51.09).
- Maddie Brummer and Shay Bennett placed top five in discus.
- Stella Schackmann also took 4th in the 200m and 3rd in long jump.
Final Thoughts
Both Newton teams demonstrated grit, teamwork, and depth with multiple athletes contributing points across a wide range of events. With many underclassmen turning in standout performances, including several freshmen placing in the top 8, the future of Newton track and field looks especially bright.
