Newton Varsity Eagles took the lead late in the game in a 4-2 victory over Mattoon on Tuesday. The game was tied at two with Newton Varsity Eagles batting in the top of the sixth when Isaac Flowers grounded out, scoring one run.
Mattoon opened up scoring in the first inning, when Cayden Knierim tripled on a 3-2 count, scoring one run.
Gus Bierman was credited with the victory for Newton Varsity Eagles. The lefthander went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out three and walking one. Flowers threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Flowers recorded the last three outs to earn the save for Newton Varsity Eagles.
Logan MacDonald took the loss for Mattoon. The bulldog surrendered zero runs on one hit over three and two-thirds innings, striking out five.
Gage Reynolds, Flowers, Carder Reich, and Ben Meinhart each collected one hit to lead Newton Varsity Eagles. Newton Varsity Eagles didn’t commit a single error in the field. Max Meinhart had seven chances in the field, the most on the team.
Zach Wetzel went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Mattoon in hits.
