Newton Volleyball Splits with Carmi; Varsity Falls in Three Sets

The Newton Community High School volleyball teams hit the court on Monday, September 15, against Carmi, with all three levels seeing action. The Eagles came away with a freshman split, a junior varsity win, and a hard-fought varsity loss.

The freshman squad split their two sets with scores of 15-25 and 25-12, showing resilience after dropping the opener. The JV squad kept momentum rolling, sweeping Carmi in straight sets 25-18, 25-16 to secure the team victory.

In varsity action, Newton opened strong with a convincing 25-15 first-set win before Carmi answered back, taking the next two sets 25-18 and 25-17. The loss dropped the varsity Eagles to 6-8 on the season.

Senior Hydi Bierman led the offensive charge with 10 kills, while senior Joslynn Pitcher added 5 and senior Isabel Meinhart chipped in 3. Sophomore Emma Brooks tallied 11 assists and junior Amy Shull added 10 more as the Eagles spread out their attack.

Defensively, senior libero Morgan Schafer anchored the back row with 17 digs, while Bierman collected 14 of her own. At the net, sophomore Stella Schackmann and Pitcher each recorded 3 blocks. Schackmann also powered in 4 aces from the service line.

Newton will look to bounce back in their next matchup as they continue through the heart of their schedule under head coach Jill Kistner.
