“Safety City” Encouraging Walking and Biking Safety Amongst Students

On October 22 from 5:30 – 7:00 pm at Newton Elementary School the City of Newton in conjunction with the Jasper. County Schools will be hosting a “Safety City” where school personnel, crossing guards, and first responders will teach students how to walk and bike using sidewalks while providing a safe environment.

All participants at the event will be entered into a raffle for bicycles, scooters, and safety equipment. This event is part of the Illinois Safe Route to Schools Grant which provides the opportunity to receive state funding to institute local projects helping to boost the health and safety of children by making walking and biking to school safer and more accessible.

In the application, the City of Newton listed the enhancement of infrastructure (sidewalks) and the education of students regarding important aspects of walking and biking safely around town as the two main areas of focus.
