Sainte Marie American Legion Auxiliary Unit 932 to Distribute Poppies
Every year, during Memorial Day weekend, American Legion Auxiliary units across American distribute poppies. Connecting the visual image of the poppy with the sacrifice of service made by our veterans has been an important goal of the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Program since its inception in 1921.
On Memorial Day weekend, millions of red crepe paper poppies – all handmade by veterans as part of their therapeutic rehabilitation—are distributed across the country in exchange for donations that go directly to assist disabled and hospitalized veterans in our communities.
The Sainte Marie American Legion Auxiliary Unit 932 has been part of the poppy program since their unit was formed in 1945. Wives and grandmothers of area sons and daughters who enlisted during WWII were excited about forming their unit in the newly formed Legion post in Sainte Marie and the Legion family members who built the posted sacrificed much to accomplish that goal.
The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms. Wear a poppy to honor those who have worn our nation’s uniform.
All donations received will be used by the Sainte Marie American Legion Auxiliary Unit 932 for their programs that support veterans.
The Auxiliary Unit 932 will be distributing poppies at The Gas Station in Sainte Marie from 8 am – 8 pm and at Hartrich Meats from 8 am to 12:30 pm. Hartrich will be serving 1/3 pound pork burgers and bacon on a stick for lunch from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Auxiliary in honor of their matriarch, Lucie Hartrich, charter member of the Sainte Marie American Legion Auxiliary Unit 932.
