St Thomas defeated Oblong 11-1 in the first round of the Class A Regional in Newton Monday afternoon. Oblong tallied their only run in the first inning. The Saints pushed 3 runs across the plate in the first, 3 in the second, and 5 in the fourth.
St Thomas was led by Drew Earnest, Alex Gier and Drake Herdes at the plate. All had 2 hits while Gier drove in 3 runs, Herdes – 2 and Earnest – 1.
Earnest was also the winning pitcher, going 4 strong innings. Carter Barthelme came in the top of 5th to get the Saints out of a bases loaded jam.
St Thomas advances to the second round where they will play at top seeded Sigel on Tuesday.
