Three Newton Golfers Advance to Sectionals

The Newton Eagles boys golf team turned in a strong performance at the IHSA Class 1A Regional held at Green Hills Golf Course in McLeansboro on Tuesday, finishing fourth overall with a team score of 326. Despite missing a team advancement by just 10 strokes, three Eagles punched their tickets to sectionals with standout rounds.

Michael Kennedy led the way for Newton, firing a score good enough to place third overall individually in the field. Joining him at sectionals will be teammates Jackson James and Nolen Cleaver, who also qualified as individuals with solid performances under pressure.

Teutopolis captured the team title with a dominant 292, followed by Mt. Carmel (315) and Hamilton County (316). Newton’s fourth-place finish came just short of the top-three cut line, but the individual success ensures Eagle representation in the next round of postseason play.

The advancing trio will compete at the Effingham Country Club Sectional, where they will look to continue their season and battle for a berth in the state finals.
