Following is a summary of minutes of a regular meeting of the Board of Education of Jasper County
Community Unit School District No. 1 held on Monday, March 18 th , 2024 in the office of the Board of
Education. Board members present were Mrs. Mandy Rieman, Mrs. Holly Farley, Mrs. Mandi Utley, Mr.
David Blecha, and Mrs. Jackie Schackmann. Board members absent were Mr. Bill Meinhart and Mr.
Brady Shull.
All votes are considered unanimous unless otherwise noted.
Mandy Rieman called the meeting to order.
Approval to Adopt Agenda.
Mandy asked for Recognition of Guests and Public Comments. Brett Lesley from Peoples State Bank
presented the five Illinois State Scholars with a Silver Eagle Coin. Scholars presented were Elley Bennett
and Aleah Higgs. Scholars absent were Kye Bergbower, Katie Shamhart and Luke Weber.
There were no FOIA Requests.

Under the Superintendent’s Report, Mr. Sornberger discussed the Illinois Legislative update for schools.
Legislation that affects our education system totals to 1,120 bills. Mr. Sornberger also discussed
amending the FY 24 School Calendar due to the eclipse day occurring on April 8 th , 2024. The decision
was made in the best interest for safety of all students. Mr. Sornberger also discussed the FY 25 School
Calendar and adjustments made to incorporate two Teacher Inservice days on August 12 th and August
13 th to begin the school year due to building projects being completed around that time.
Approval of Renewal for Membership with the IHSA and IESA.
Approval to Amend 2023-2024 School Calendar.
Approval of the 2024-2025 School Calendar.
Approval of Contract with Kajeet for the 2024-2025 School Year.
Approval to enter executive session at 6:53 p.m. for 5 ILCS 120/2 (c) (1,) – To Consider Information
Regarding Appointment, Employment, Compensation or Dismissal of Individual Employees; 5ILCS 120/2
(c) (21) – To discuss minutes of meetings lawfully closed under the open meetings act (July 1, 2021 –
December 31, 2021); 5 ILCS 120/2 (c) (10) – The Placement of individual students in special education
programs and other matters relating to individual students.
Approval to return to open session at 7:05 p.m.
Approval to keep closed the Closed Session Minutes from July 1 st , 2021 to December 31 st , 2021.
Approval of Julia Whittler as a member of Strong Girls Program at NES.
Approval to accept the letters of retirement from Tonya Hall as 5 th Grade NES Teacher at the end of the
2026-2027 School Year and from Cindy Frohning as NCHS Cross Cat Teacher at the end of the 2025-2026
School Year.
Meeting adjourned at 7:10p.m. Next regular board meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 15 th , 2024 at
6:30 p.m. at the Board of Education Office located at 1401 Clayton Avenue.
