The Newton Eagles picked up a hard-fought road victory Tuesday night, defeating Effingham Hearts 45–41 in Effingham.
The Eagles set the tone early in a physical, defensive battle that stayed tight throughout all four quarters. Newton executed well in the half-court offense and limited Effingham’s scoring opportunities with strong on-ball pressure and disciplined team defense.
Effingham kept the game within reach behind timely baskets and aggressive play in the paint, but Newton responded whenever momentum threatened to swing. The Eagles were able to string together key possessions late, converting important shots and protecting the basketball down the stretch.
In the fourth quarter, Newton made the necessary plays on both ends of the floor, forcing stops and capitalizing at the free-throw line to secure the road win. Effingham continued to battle until the final horn, but Newton’s composure proved to be the difference.
The win marks an important road victory for the Eagles as they continue conference play.
