NEWTON — The Newton Varsity Eagles broke things open early and never looked back Monday, rolling to a 13-2 victory over Flora at Jasper County Boys & Girls Park.
Newton used a huge third inning and aggressive base running to take control, improving behind a balanced offensive attack and a strong outing on the mound from Gavin Meinhart.
Drake Wolf led the charge offensively, driving in four runs on two hits. He delivered clutch singles in both the third and fourth innings, each time bringing in a pair of runs as the Eagles steadily pulled away.
Newton first got on the board in the second inning, capitalizing on a Flora error to take an early lead. But it was the third inning where the Eagles blew the game open, plating six runs on timely hitting and patience at the plate.
Dexter Fulton drew a walk and came around to score, David Ferguson delivered a two-run double, and Wolf added another two-run single to highlight the inning.
Newton continued to apply pressure in the fourth, adding four more runs to put the game out of reach.
The Eagles showed discipline throughout, drawing seven walks and swiping multiple bases to keep Flora off balance.
Gavin Meinhart earned the win on the mound, working 4⅓ innings while allowing just two runs — none earned — on six hits. He struck out five and did not issue a walk in a steady, efficient performance.
At the plate, Meinhart also led the Eagles with a perfect 3-for-3 day, while Quincy Fulton added two hits and reached base four times. Dexter Fulton scored three runs and contributed on the base paths as Newton racked up seven stolen bases.
Flora’s offense was led by Gage Parker and Luke Himelick, who each drove in a run.
Newton returns to action Tuesday at home against WSS.
