Newton’s boys tennis team ran into a tough Casey (C.-Westfield) [Coop] squad, falling 8-1 in a Little Illini Conference matchup.
Casey-Westfield controlled much of the day in singles play, sweeping all six matches. At No. 1, Kahlin Michl faced a strong challenge in Kellen Sullivan, who secured a 6-0, 6-0 win. Alex Hancock of Casey-Westfield added another point at No. 2 singles, holding off Newton’s Michael Shamhart in a tighter second set, 6-0, 7-5.
The most competitive match of the day came at No. 3 singles, where Newton’s Brett Bower battled Wade Winnett in a back-and-forth contest. Bower dropped a first-set tiebreak, responded with a 6-2 second set win, but ultimately fell in a 10-5 super tiebreak.
At No. 4, Noah Goad put together a solid effort before falling 6-2, 6-4 to William Cochonour. Oliver Ochs (No. 5) and Tyler Spiker (No. 6) rounded out singles play, with both Eagles competing but unable to overcome Casey-Westfield’s depth.
Newton’s lone victory came in doubles action at No. 2, where Noah Goad and Michael Shamhart delivered a strong performance. The duo edged Casey-Westfield’s Gavin Ridge and Ronald Simmons in a 7-6, 6-3 win, showcasing resilience in a tight opening set before pulling away.
In other doubles matches, Kahlin Michl and Brett Bower fell at No. 1, while Oliver Ochs and Ryan Spiker dropped the No. 3 match.
Despite the final score, Newton showed flashes of competitiveness, particularly in the No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles matches. The Eagles will look to build on those efforts as they continue conference play.
