The Newton Eagles celebrated Senior Night in winning fashion Thursday, using a four-run fifth inning and a strong pitching performance from senior Drake Wolf to defeat Farina South Central 4-2.
Before the game, Newton recognized six seniors for their contributions to the program: Dexter Fulton, Drake Wolf, Dominic Baltzell, David Ferguson, Carson Barthelme, and Reed Tharp.
After four scoreless innings, Farina South Central broke through with two runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Newton quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning, erupting for four runs to take control of the contest.
Wolf led the Eagles both at the plate and on the mound during the Senior Night victory. The senior went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a double while also earning the win after pitching six innings. Wolf allowed two runs on seven hits, struck out seven, and walked two.
Carson Barthelme added a double and an RBI for Newton, while Gavin Meinhart and Mason Horner each recorded hits and scored runs. Horner also drove in a run during the decisive fifth inning rally.
Newton’s defense was flawless behind its pitching staff, committing no errors in the game. Dominic Baltzell led the Eagles defensively with nine chances in the field.
Barthelme came on in relief in the seventh inning to secure the save, allowing one hit while striking out one.
Farina South Central finished with eight hits in the game. Luke Shumate led the Cougars offensively by going 3-for-4, while Ryder Dodson drove in both runs for South Central.
The Eagles finished with six hits and improved their momentum heading into Friday’s matchup with Neoga.
