
The Newton Eagles picked up a strong shutout victory over Casey-Westfield on Monday before falling in a tightly contested battle with Edwards County on Tuesday. Newton showed solid pitching in both games, allowing just two total earned runs across 14 innings.
Against Casey-Westfield, Newton broke open a scoreless game with a three-run sixth inning to earn a 3-0 victory on the road. Carson Barthelme tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing five hits while striking out six in seven innings.
Dominic Baltzell continued his strong season at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Gavin Meinhart delivered the biggest swing of the game with a two-run homer. Quentin Fulton and Reed Tharp each added doubles as Newton collected six hits.
Defensively, the Eagles turned a double play and worked around three errors to preserve the shutout. Barthelme earned the win after throwing 90 pitches in the complete-game effort.
Newton returned home Tuesday and battled Edwards County in another low-scoring contest before dropping a 2-1 decision. The Lions broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning and held on the rest of the way.
Eli Wolf gave the Eagles another quality start, allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out six over six innings. Gavin Meinhart was dominant in relief, striking out the side on nine pitches in a perfect seventh inning.
Newton managed three hits in the loss, with David Ferguson, Dominic Baltzell, and Maddox Horner each recording one. Drake Wolf scored the Eagles’ lone run after Newton tied the game in the fourth inning.
The Eagles also played error-free baseball defensively and turned two double plays in the contest.
