Gary Lee Koester, age 67

August 14, 1958 – May 30, 2026


Gary Lee Koester, age 67, of Dieterich, Illinois, passed away at 1:02 PM on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at HSHS Saint Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, Illinois.

Graveside services for family members will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, June 5, 2026, at the Dieterich Village Cemetery south of Dieterich, Illinois.  Arrangements are under the care of the Meyer Funeral Home in Dieterich, Illinois.  The obituary can be viewed and condolences left at www.meyerfh.com.

Gar was born on August 14, 1958, in Effingham, Illinois, the son of Paul and Marilyn (Lewis) Koester.  He lived a life centered on family, hard work, and community. Gary was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Gary spent most of his working career with R.R. Donnelley & Sons, where he was respected for his dedication and strong work ethic.  In his younger years, he proudly achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, an accomplishment that reflected the character, perseverance, and leadership he carried throughout his life.  Gary was quiet and reserved but had a quick Witt.

One of Gary’s greatest joys was supporting his children in their activities.  Whether it was on the field or the court, he could often be found cheering them on.  His love for his family was evident in everything he did, and he especially treasured the time spent with his grandchildren.

Gary was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Dieterich.  

Gary is survived by his son, Byrum Koester and wife Mallory; his daughter, Michele Lowry and husband Jon; and his beloved grandchildren, Dylan, Amelia, Olivia, Brandt, and Payton.

He is also survived by his sister, Judy Niemerg and her husband Allen; his brother, Rick Koester and his wife Ronda; along with nieces, nephews, extended family and friends who will cherish his memory.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Marilyn Koester.

Gary will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering support of his family, and the kindness he showed to those around him.  His legacy lives on through the family he loved so deeply and the many lives he touched throughout his years.
