Eagles Fall 1-0 to Olney in Physical Battle Under the Lights
The Newton Eagles fell 1-0 to the Olney Tigers under the lights Thursday night in a physical, hard-fought soccer match that featured plenty of big challenges and a battle from start to finish.
Newton came out aggressively, pressing Olney’s back four and creating opportunities early. The Eagles nearly broke through when Brock Anderson fired a shot toward goal that Olney goalkeeper Levi Hefferman tipped onto the crossbar before the ball came back down to him.
The Tigers continued to face pressure from Newton, using physical play to disrupt the Eagles’ attack. Several late tackles from behind slowed Newton’s momentum, including a challenge on Henry Will that resulted in an ankle sprain. The injury limited Will’s mobility and became a factor in Newton’s attacking effort for the remainder of the match.
Despite the physical play, neither team was able to find the back of the net before halftime, sending the teams into the break tied 0-0.
The second half continued in much the same fashion, with both teams battling for possession and putting in big 50-50 challenges. The physical nature of the contest was reflected on the stat sheet, with Newton receiving five yellow cards and Olney receiving three.
Newton’s best opportunity to change the match came before an Olney counterattack ultimately decided the contest. A poorly delivered free kick combined with a mistimed touch allowed the Tigers to break forward, and Olney capitalized on the opportunity to score the match’s only goal.
Newton continued to battle but could not find an equalizer as Olney held on for the 1-0 victory.
The Eagles will have another opportunity against the Tigers when the teams meet again at the Mattoon Tournament.
