Amateur “HAM” Radio again showing Emergency Capabilities

Since 1933 Amateur Radio operators have gathered collectively on the last full weekend of June to demonstrate their ability to operate and communicate in challenging conditions and locations as a united show of ability. And this June 27th and 28th will be no different.

On those days beginning at 11:00 AM local time and ending at around 12:00 noon the following day, Amateur Radio operators throughout the US and Canada will be set up in State and City Parks, Parking lots and other public and private areas, (many accessible to curious passersby) to demonstrate the abilities and functions of Amateur Radio. This event is known as Amateur Radio Field Day and is sanctioned by the Amateur Radio Relay League in Newington Connecticut. The official spokesperson arm of the hobby and representative of same to the Federal Communications Commission and other US Government entities.

The public is encouraged to come and observe the operations and ask questions they may have about the role of Amateur Radio in being able to provide “back up” communications resources in the event of a local and/or regional outage of communications infrastructure. Such as would be the case in the event of mass flooding, wildfires, earthquakes, or other massive disruptions. You are also encouraged to ask any questions you may have about the requirements to become a licensed Amateur Radio operator.

You are encouraged to go online to “www.arrl.org/field-day-locator” There you will find a “google” map which you can maneuver to isolate the area in which you wish to find an active site. Click on any “push-pin/balloon” and the site information will be available.
