Newton High School sophomore Olivia Sornberger is headed to the IHSA Girls Tennis State Tournament after an impressive performance at the IHSA Sectional Tournament.
Sornberger, seeded No. 2 in the sectional draw, battled her way through the competition to earn a spot in the championship match against top-seeded Abbie Lee of Teutopolis. Lee won the match 6-1, 6-2, sending Sornberger to the third-place match.
Sornberger responded with a strong performance against No. 3 seed Daisy Mumford of Casey-Westfield, winning 6-2, 6-4 to secure third place and punch her ticket to state.
Sornberger’s run through the sectional included a victory over Bella Schultz of Effingham St. Anthony in the opening round, followed by a win over No. 5 seed Raegan Zerrusen of Teutopolis in the next round. She then defeated Zerrusen’s teammate, Lee, in the third-place match?
