Free Tax Help
AARP to Offer Free Tax Assistance at St. Thomas Parish Center
AARP Tax Aide will again provide free tax services at the St. Thomas Parish Center, 306 W. Jourdan St. in Newton, on Mondays from 8:45-2:45 beginning February 10. Although these services are primarily for senior citizens, low to moderate income taxpayers of all ages are welcome. There is no charge for this service, but an appointment is required.
Returns are completed and filed electronically during the appointment. Due to IRS regulations, returns cannot be completed if they include items such as farm income or expenses; rental income (except land-only rentals); complicated capital gains/losses, such as futures or options; income from self-employment if there are employees, losses, expenses that exceed $25,000, depreciation, business use of the home or other complicating factors; moving expenses; royalty income with expenses if not from self-employment; depreciation; and a few other areas.
The AARP Tax Aide Program requires that participants bring:
 Photo ID for all taxpayers on the return
 Social security card or other official document showing the social security number or ITIN
of everyone included on the tax return (Form SSA-1099, letter from Social Security, etc.)
 Real estate tax bill and payment receipt, including the Property Index Number (not mobile
home taxes)
 Last year’s tax return
 All income forms: W-2, all 1099s, Social Security, Railroad Retirement, etc.
 Interest, dividend, and royalty statements
 Business income and expense records
 Charitable contributions records
 Educational expense records (Form 1098-T, student’s school financial account, etc.)
 Health insurance documents (Form 1095-A if they have marketplace health insurance)
 Any other deductible expense records
 Bank account numbers for direct deposit of their refund (a blank check works for this)
