From the harness racing program booklet for Monday. In race two on Monday which was the “Steve Dooley Memorial, Lous Diablo was the winner. Lous Diablo was owned by Steve Dooley and in this race was driven by Jasper County native, Harold Finn Jr.
“Steven Dooley will be remembered by many for many things. He was a loving son, dad, grandfather, brother, and friend. Steve loved his horses. He had been involved in harness racing since the 1970s when he trained and rove horses. Steve was a 2nd generation horseman. Although Steve stepped away from driving and training to support his two songs, it was very clear he loved the sport. Steve owned many horses over the years and was able to pass down the love for horses and harness racing to his sons and his two granddaughters to carry on the Dooley name in the world of harness racing.
In the recent years prior to his death, Steve had really enjoyed watching the Louis Legacy horses and had a desire for one of his own. That wouldn’t come true until last year at the Illini yearling sale. Steve got his Louis. After bringing his two horses home from the sale, he had the biggest smile on his face and said, “It’s going to be a good year of racing.”
Steve always had something funny to say and would do anything for anyone he cared about. He had a lot of wisdom to pass along, and he made sure you knew what he was thinking.
Although Steve is gone from this world too soon and can not be here to watch his roses race, we as his family and friends know he is looking down and cheering loud right along with us. ”
The sixth race on Monday was named the Carl Becker Memorial. Carl Becker called the races in Jasper County.
“Carl established the Fair Meadow Farm in 1980 and bred the winners of $40 million over the course of the past four decades. In 2000, Carl Becker was inducted into the Illinois Harness Horsemen’s Association Hall of Fame, and he was a 2018 inductee into the Communicators’ Corner of the Harness Racing Hall of Fame in Goshen, NY.”
