Eagles Dominate Mules in Season Opener

The Newton Eagles defeated the Fairfield Mules with a final score of 12-1 in the Eagle’s opening game of the season. Pitching for the Eagles was Carson Barthelme who faced 21 batters allowing only four hits and one run (zero earned) over the six-inning game. He stuck out five and walked four.

The Eagles had 16 hits with Payton Harris and Max Meinhart leading the way in hits with three each. Isaac Flowers led the Eagles with three runs batted in and David Ferguson had three walks.

In defense, the Eagles committed one error resulting in the lone run for the Mules, however, they also turned two double plays in the game.

Flowers began the scoring in the third when he doubled, scoring the first run. In the top of the fourth, the Eagles ran away with the game scoring five runs on six hits to take the lead they would then keep throughout the game. In the top of the sixth, Drake Wolf doubled, scoring two runs. Gus Bierman singled, scoring one run. C. Barthelme doubled scoring one run,Reed Tharp singled, scoring one run, and Ferguson hit a fielder’s choice with one run scoring.
