Monday Musical: “Newsies” NCHS Senior Cast Member Caydon Goode

NCHS Senior Caydon Goode, son of Jerry Goode and Danyel Goode, will take the stage in the musical performance of “Newsies” as Joseph Pulitzer on April 10 through the 13th, with show times of 7 pm for Thursday through Saturday and 2pm on Sunday. Tickets will be available from cast members beginning February 17 and then in the school offices after that.

What musicals have you been in at NCHS and what characters/roles did you play?

I have only been involved in one other musical and that was “Oklahoma!”  last Spring. I played the role of Ike Skidmore. This year I am playing the role of Joseph Pulitzer in “Newsies.”

What was your favorite musical and why?

My favorite musical was Oklahoma because I feel like all of the cast members worked well together and it was overall an entertaining and fun show to put on. It was also my first show and it helped me grow closer to a lot of people.

What scene in Newsies is your favorite and why? (This does not have to be a scene you are in)

My favorite scene is probably Seize the Day. I really like the music to it, and even though they’re all against my character in that scene, I like watching the choreography. My favorite scene that I am in is the second scene of Pulitzer’s office because it builds tension and suspense in the storyline.

What are three things being in the musical have taught you? and how have you learned these?

One thing that musical has taught me is time management. It isn’t easy to juggle musical with other extracurricular activities and school work, but it has helped me get better at managing my time. Another thing musical has helped me with is confidence. I remember opening night of Oklahoma, and how nervous I was on the stage for the first time, but by the end of the night it became more natural. It helped me build confidence in myself and more comfortable on the stage. Musical has also taught me to surround myself with the most supportive people. I know you’ve heard before that musical is like a second family, and it really is. All of the hours and weeks that we spend together, helps grow our cast closer together. It is a really great atmosphere because everyone is so supportive of one another.

What are two pieces of advice you would give young people who want to start performing in musicals at NCHS?

Two pieces of advice I’d give to younger kids are don’t wait and have fun. First off, if you’re even remotely thinking of trying musical, just try it. Don’t wait until the last years to try it because you may regret not doing trying it sooner. Secondly, have fun. Musical is one of the most fun things to do in high school. You are surrounded by the best people, and doing something you love. It can be nerve racking at times, but don’t forget to have fun.

What qualities do you see exemplified in the adults who help put on this show that you will take with you as you leave NCHS and how do they demonstrate these qualities?

The adults in charge of musical are so hardworking and put a lot of time and effort into putting on a great show. Mr. Finley and Kristie are there every practice, reviewing choreography, blocking scenes, and going over music. Despite being in college, Megan also goes above and beyond, blocking scenes and helping prep all of the musical kids for April. Dawn comes from work to play the piano for us to go over music and run scenes. Laurie, Amy, Jamie, and all of the other costumers and parents are there almost every night in order to get everyone’s costumes fitted and sewed by April. Travis, Larry, and all of the other construction guys work so hard on our sets a props to make sure everything is built and ready before show time. At the end of the day, all of the adults involved show just how hard they work and are great role models for all musical kids.

What about Newsies is different from other musicals you have been in?

One thing that is different for me in this musical is that I have a bigger part. Last year I was more of a background part, but this year I have a bigger part. Another thing that’s different is that I’m the bad guy. I never thought I would play that part, but I’m glad to be playing it because Pulitzer is such a fun part.

What will you miss the most once the final curtain closes on your NCHS musical career?

The thing I will miss most is my musical family. The last two years have helped me grow closer to a lot of people. I will miss all of the friendships I’ve built and making memories with some of the best people.
