At 5:51 am on Sunday, June 8th, the Wade Community Fire Protection District was called to the Dollar General at 702 S Van Buren Street in Newton due to smoke coming out of the building. Upon arrival, heavy smoke was coming out of the west side of the building. They deployed three 1 ¾ hand lines and forced entry into the west doors. Upon entering the building, the firefighters found heavy black smoke and extreme heat. Firefighters located the fire in the southwest corner of the building. After the fire was extinguished, the north and south doors were utilized to ventilate the building and air it out while waiting for the State Fire Marshall to arrive.
The State Fire Marshall arrived, and the investigation started. The fire is still under investigation and remains undetermined. Fire Chief Gary Lindemann states, “We would like to thank all of our mutual aid help from the surrounding departments and the community for their assistance and kindness as we fought the fire and waited to ensure safety.”
