Jasper County residents interested in running for local office in the 2027 Consolidated Election will soon be able to begin the process of seeking nomination.
According to a notice from Jasper County Clerk/Recorder Amy Tarr, petition circulation dates and filing periods have been established for several local offices.
For school district board members and Newton Public Library District trustees, both of which are nonpartisan offices, candidates may begin circulating nominating petitions on August 25, 2026.
Candidates for those offices must file their nomination documents during the designated filing period of November 16 through November 23, 2026.
Candidates interested in serving on the Newton City Council also have upcoming deadlines. The offices up for consideration include Alderman for Ward 1, Ward 2 and Ward 3, as well as positions on the Zoning Board.
Petition circulation for Newton municipal offices began July 28, 2026. The filing period for established party and nonpartisan municipal nominations will be October 19 through October 26, 2026.
Several smaller Jasper County municipalities will follow the municipal caucus process. In municipalities with populations under 5,000, established political parties will hold their caucuses on December 7, 2026.
Those municipalities include Hidalgo, Rose Hill, Sainte Marie, Wheeler, Willow Hill and Yale.
Certificates of nomination from those caucuses must be filed with the respective municipal clerk during the December 14 through December 21, 2026, filing period.
The 2027 Consolidated Election will give voters an opportunity to choose representatives for local government, school districts and library services throughout the county.
Candidates considering a run for office should review the filing requirements and make sure all required nomination documents and petitions are completed properly before the applicable filing deadlines.
