The Newton Eagles picked up a 3-1 victory over the Robinson Maroons at home in the Pink Out match, held in honor of Bill Meinhart and sponsored by the Jasper County Cancer Support Committee.
Robinson found some early success using a false nine, or withdrawn striker, during the opening 15 minutes. Newton adjusted to the formation and began to take control of the match.
Against the run of play, Brock Anderson opened the scoring for the Eagles after beating two Robinson defenders and slotting the ball into the lower left side of the goal. Holden Barthelemy started the play by switching the ball to Anderson, who finished the opportunity.
Brett Bower recognized Robinson’s formation and applied pressure to the Maroons’ number nine, ultimately disrupting their pivot player and helping Newton regain control of the match.
Evan Holder then provided a deft assist to Henry Will, who finished from a similar angle to Anderson to extend the Eagles’ advantage.
Holder added a goal of his own after running through the Robinson back four following a monstrous punt from Newton goalkeeper Curtis Weber. The Eagles carried a 3-0 advantage into halftime.
Newton received important contributions in the second half from Diego Gonzales, Aden Guzman, Jordyn McClure, Xavier Neal and Ethan Deckard, who all played crucial minutes in securing the victory.
Daniel Falcioni, Bill Meinhart’s grandson, turned in another exceptional performance. His work rate and tactical awareness helped thwart numerous potential Robinson attacks, while his build-up play created multiple opportunities for the Eagles.
Newton had an opportunity to add to its lead from the penalty spot, but the Maroons’ goalkeeper made the save. Robinson eventually found the net in the dying minutes of the match, but the Eagles held on for the 3-1 victory.
The Pink Out match provided an opportunity for the Newton soccer community to honor Bill Meinhart while also recognizing the ongoing efforts of the Jasper County Cancer Support Committee.
