The Newton Community High School cross country teams turned in a strong showing at their recent meet, with the Eagles claiming the team championship in the boys’ competition and several Newton runners recording personal-best times.
Newton’s boys finished first as a team with 23 points, comfortably ahead of Teutopolis with 48 points and Dieterich with 60 points. The Eagles placed five runners among the top eight finishers, giving Newton a commanding advantage in the team scoring.
Levi Salyers led the Newton effort, winning the race with a time of 18:05. Salyers, an 11th grader, recorded a new personal best.
Jeremiah Hills followed with a third-place finish in 18:50. The sophomore also established a personal best.
Avery Geier, an 11th grader, crossed the finish line in 18:45 for fourth place and a new personal-best time.
Kendall Probst finished seventh in 19:32. The 10th grader also posted a personal best.
Heather Bergbower rounded out the Newton runners in the top eight, finishing eighth in 19:13. Bergbower, a 10th grader, recorded a new personal best.
Newton continued to put runners across the finish line in strong positions. Chloe Holsapple finished 11th in 19:32, while Nora Street placed 12th in 20:55. Both are 9th and 10th graders, respectively, with each recording a personal-best time.
Kimberly Bierman finished in 21:51, followed by Josie Vogt in 22:39 and Kate Bierman in 22:47. Vogt is a 10th grader, while Kate Bierman is a senior.
The Newton boys’ scoring lineup of Salyers, Hills, Geier, Probst and Bergbower totaled 23 points to secure the team victory. Teutopolis placed second with 48 points, followed by Dieterich with 60.
The meet also produced an impressive collection of personal records for Newton runners, highlighting the continued progress of the Eagles early in the season.
