The Newton Eagles battled back from an early deficit Friday night but couldn’t complete the comeback, falling 36-26 to Civic Memorial on Aug. 21.
Civic Memorial took a 14-13 lead after the opening quarter and extended its advantage with a 9-0 second quarter to take a 23-13 lead into halftime. Newton answered with a 7-point third quarter, cutting the deficit to 29-20, but Civic Memorial added seven more points in the fourth while Newton scored six.
Newton’s offense produced 419 total yards, including 314 yards through the air and 105 on the ground.
Quarterbacks Eli Wolf and Hayden Mulvey combined for 16 completions on 34 attempts for 314 yards and three touchdowns.
Wolf completed 6 of 14 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown, including a long completion of 80 yards. He also rushed 11 times for 43 yards and a touchdown.
Mulvey completed 10 of 19 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns. His longest completion covered 43 yards. He also contributed 26 rushing yards on four carries.
Newton’s receiving attack was led by Maddox Horner, who caught five passes for 179 yards and a touchdown. Horner’s biggest play was an 80-yard reception.
Quincy Fulton caught nine passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns, while Dylan Earnest added two receptions for 26 yards.
On the ground, Wolf led Newton with 43 yards and a touchdown. Mulvey added 26 yards, while Horner rushed for 23 yards. William Michl contributed seven yards and Fulton added six.
Defensively, Henry Will led the Eagles with eight total tackles, including three solo tackles and five assists. Harrison Kinkade recorded seven tackles, five of them solo, along with two tackles for loss and a sack. William Michl and Ian Kessler each finished with four tackles, while Kessler also recorded a tackle for loss.
Newton’s defense totaled 62 tackles, with 31 solo tackles and 31 assisted tackles. The Eagles also recorded four tackles for loss, two sacks and recovered one fumble.
Civic Memorial finished with 483 total yards, including 350 passing and 133 rushing. Quarterback Luke Clouser completed 16 of 29 passes for 324 yards and three touchdowns while adding 31 rushing yards and another touchdown.
Grady Ferrell was Civic Memorial’s leading receiver with five catches for 148 yards and three touchdowns. Braden Rayner added five receptions for 84 yards, while Lukus Zangori caught three passes for 57 yards and a touchdown.
Despite the loss, Newton’s offense showed its ability to create explosive plays, recording five passes of at least 20 yards and two of at least 40 yards. Horner’s 80-yard touchdown reception was the Eagles’ longest play through the air.
Newton also converted 46.2 percent of its third-down opportunities and 50 percent of its fourth-down attempts.
The Eagles will look to regroup and build on the offensive production as they continue the 2026 season.
