NEWTON — The stage at Newton Community High School was alive with music, energy, and a whole lot of heart as students brought Sister Act! The Musical to life, blending humor, faith, and powerful performances into a production that reflected both talent and community pride.
Under the direction of Jeffrey Finley, this year’s musical drew inspiration from the beloved 1992 film while standing firmly on its own with original music and a message that resonated beyond the stage. Finley emphasized the show’s central theme, noting that the production highlighted what could happen when people were open to new ideas and different ways of thinking, ultimately exploring transformation on personal, cultural, and spiritual levels.
The show centered around Deloris Van Cartier, played by Lucy Bierman, whose life took an unexpected turn when she was placed in a convent for protection. There, she transformed a struggling choir into a vibrant musical force, helping the sisters rediscover their voices—both literally and figuratively.
The cast was anchored by a strong group of senior performers, including Lucy Bierman, Shay Bennett, Johnnie Brant, AJ Pitcher, Jailyn Hall, Cameron Newkirk, Elliott Kocher, Karly Deckard, and Sadie Iffert. Together with a full ensemble, the production delivered a dynamic and engaging performance from start to finish.
“This truly takes a village,” Finley noted in the program, recognizing the collective effort behind the production.
As the curtain rose, Sister Act! was more than just a musical—it was a celebration of collaboration, growth, and the power of stepping outside your comfort zone.
