Newton residents will have the opportunity to clean up and give back to the environment as the “Fill Up Friday” Community Recycle Days kick off on May 1.
Hosted by Nucor Skyline, the recycling collection drive will be held on Fridays as posted from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 602 S. Van Buren in Newton.
The program encourages residents to bring approved recyclable materials and help reduce waste in the community. Accepted items include metal, paper, plastic, and glass, but organizers are reminding participants to review guidelines carefully before arriving.
Items should be clean and empty, with lids and caps replaced when possible. Materials must be placed loose—not in bags—for drop-off.
Accepted materials include:
- Metal: steel and aluminum containers and foil
- Paper: flattened cardboard, office paper, newspapers, and magazines
- Plastic: bottles, tubs, jugs, and jars only
- Glass: bottles and jars only
There are several items that will not be accepted, including plastic bags, food waste, liquids, clothing, electronics, propane tanks, hoses, cords, and other large or hazardous materials. Shredded paper is also not accepted unless properly bagged.
Organizers stress that following the guidelines helps ensure the recycling process runs smoothly and keeps contamination out of the system.
With spring cleanup underway, the return of Fill Up Friday offers a convenient way for Newton residents to responsibly dispose of recyclables while supporting a cleaner, more sustainable community.
For those planning to participate, taking a few extra minutes to sort materials properly can make a big difference.
