
The Newton boys track and field team turned in a strong night Tuesday at the Pirate Invite at Cumberland, finishing third in the team standings with 78 points against a competitive field.
Host Cumberland won the meet with 164.5 points, followed by Casey-Westfield with 105. Newton placed ahead of Teutopolis, Vandalia, Altamont, St. Anthony, Brownstown, Dieterich, Heritage and Shiloh.
Newton was led by a first-place finish from Henry Will in the 400 meters. Will clocked a personal-best 53.33 to win the event, while teammate Parker Harris added more team points with a sixth-place finish in 54.57.
The Eagles also got a win in the 4×400 relay, where Will, Matthew Haskett, Harris and Hayden Borgic teamed up for a first-place time of 3:39.74. Newton added runner-up finishes in both the 4×100 and 4×200 relays. In each race, the quartet of Brock Anderson, Eli Wolf, Dexter Fulton and Quincy Fulton placed second, running 45.52 in the 4×100 and 1:36.35 in the 4×200.
Borgic added another big finish individually with a third-place effort in the 300 hurdles, crossing in 42.34. Wolf also reached the podium in the long jump, finishing third with a leap of 5.65 meters.
Newton picked up several other top-six finishes throughout the meet. Tanner Whitaker was fourth in the 800 in 2:10.77, Harris cleared 1.68 meters to place fourth in the high jump, and Harrison Kinkade posted a personal-best 10.61 meters to take fourth in the triple jump. Ian Kessler placed fifth in the discus at 34.73 meters, while Holden Barthelemy was sixth in the 3200 with a time of 11:50.64.
The Eagles also saw several personal-best performances. Daniel Falcioni ran a personal-best 2:22.00 in the 800, Johnnie Brant posted a personal-best 5:13.89 in the 1600, Owen Schackmann added a personal-best 5:24.04 in the 1600, and Kinkade’s triple jump mark was also a personal best.
Other Newton results included Matthew Haskett placing fifth in the 100, Brayan Ramos taking 10th in the 100 and ninth in the 200 while also finishing eighth in the long jump, Alec Bower placing 10th in the 3200, Beau Bennett taking 13th in the shot put, Caleb Flasch finishing ninth in the discus, and Harrison Kinkade placing 19th in the shot put.
Newton’s depth, strong relay performances and steady collection of points across the track and field events helped the Eagles secure a solid third-place finish in the Cumberland meet.
