Lady Eagles Rally for 10-9 Win in Autism Awareness Game Thriller

The Newton Lady Eagles delivered a night to remember Monday, edging Richland County 10-9 in a back-and-forth battle that doubled as the team’s Autism Awareness Game.

With energy high both on and off the field, the Lady Eagles fought through a game filled with momentum swings, big hits, and timely plays to secure the win in front of a supportive crowd focused on something bigger than softball.

Richland County struck first with a run in the opening inning, but Newton wasted no time responding. The Lady Eagles capitalized on early opportunities to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom half, setting the tone for what would become an offensive showcase.

After Richland County surged ahead 4-2 in the second inning, Newton answered in a big way. Sophomore Jacee Dhom delivered the biggest swing of the night, blasting a grand slam to left field to put the Lady Eagles back in front, 6-4.

Newton continued to apply pressure offensively, adding two more runs in the third and later tacking on insurance runs in the fifth. Despite being outhit 14-8, the Lady Eagles made their opportunities count—drawing walks, using aggressive baserunning, and delivering in key moments.

Allie Hermann led the way at the plate, reaching base four times while scoring four runs and driving in two. Jorjia Reich added a strong performance with two hits and two RBIs, while Dhom finished with four RBIs on the night. Paige Wagner and Emma Brooks also contributed key hits as Newton pieced together just enough offense to stay ahead.

In the circle, Karly Deckard earned the win after pitching into the third inning, with Emma Inyart coming on in relief to close things out over the final 4.2 innings. The duo worked through traffic all night, allowing nine runs on 14 hits but making crucial pitches when it mattered most.

Richland County kept the pressure on throughout, scoring in six of seven innings, including a late push in the seventh. However, Newton’s defense held firm when it counted, preserving the narrow victory.

The night carried added meaning as the Lady Eagles hosted their Autism Awareness Game, emphasizing inclusion, understanding, and support for individuals and families impacted by autism. The spirited atmosphere reflected that message, with both teams competing hard while representing something greater than the scoreboard.

Newton improves with the hard-fought win and will look to carry that momentum forward as the season continues.
