Terre Haute, Ind. — The Newton Eagles cross country teams took on one of the largest and most competitive meets of the season Saturday at the Terre Haute Invitational, held on the famed LaVern Gibson Championship Course, home to numerous collegiate and high school championship events. The meet featured hundreds of runners from across Illinois, Indiana, and surrounding states, giving Newton valuable experience against top-tier competition.

Leading the way for the Eagles was Layna Marshall, who delivered an impressive performance in the Open Blue 1 race. Marshall placed 8th overall in her section, and when both Open Blue divisions were combined, she ranked 26th out of 598 total runners — one of the best overall finishes among small-school competitors.

The Newton girls team finished 19th out of 70 schools, showcasing consistency and determination across the lineup. Their performance placed them solidly in the top third of all competing programs, a testament to the team’s balance and depth.

On the boys’ side, the Eagles competed in a strong field and finished 74th out of 86 teams. The Terre Haute course provided an ideal setting for fast times and experience on a championship-caliber layout that will benefit the runners heading into the postseason.

As the regular season enters its final stretch, both the Newton boys and girls teams will look to build on their Terre Haute results while preparing for upcoming conference and regional meets. With continued steady improvement and strong leadership from Marshall, the Eagles are poised to finish the season on a high note.
