Newton Finishes Third at LIC Girls Tennis Tournament
The Newton Lady Eagles turned in a strong showing at the Little Illini Conference Girls Tennis Tournament, finishing third overall with 12 points. Paris captured the team title with 25.5 points, followed by Casey-Westfield in second with 14.
Newton’s standout performance came in doubles play, where Jailyn Hall and Olivia Sornberger dominated the competition to win the conference championship. The pair went undefeated through the tournament, securing the title with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory over Paris’ Bella Moreschi and Myah Bartos in the final round.
Both Hall and Sornberger were recognized for their stellar performances, earning First-Team All-Conference honors.
In singles action, freshman Jenna Hall battled her way through a competitive bracket. Hall opened with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 win over Mt. Carmel’s Kate Andrews, and later defeated teammate Emma Walker 6-0, 7-5 in an internal matchup. Despite a strong start, Hall fell to eventual champion Paedyn Keys of Paris and finished just outside the medal rounds.
Newton’s second doubles team, Beth Brocious and Lauren Gier, fought hard but were edged out in a close match against Olney’s Piper Berger and Annara Cox, 6-2, 3-6, 10-7, in the later rounds.
Paris led the day in both team points and individual accolades, with Paedyn Keys capturing the singles title. Casey-Westfield’s Julia Eckerty and Daisy Mumford took third and fourth in singles, respectively.
