Newton Eagles Capture 34-20 Road Win Over Lawrenceville — Defense Dominates With Three Interceptions
The Newton Eagles put together one of their most complete performances of the season Friday night, defeating the Lawrenceville Indians 34-20 on the road. Behind an efficient passing attack and a defense that came away with three interceptions, including a pick-six, the Eagles improved their standing heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
Lawrenceville opened the scoring midway through the first quarter with a short touchdown run from Zander Cessna, but Newton quickly answered. On Newton’s first possession, quarterback Eli Wolf connected with Dexter Fulton on a 51-yard touchdown pass, tying the game at 6-6 after a failed conversion attempt.
The second quarter brought an offensive surge for the Eagles. After Lawrenceville briefly retook the lead on an 8-yard touchdown run by Zach Coffey, Quincy Fulton powered in from one yard out to even the score again. Moments later, Dexter Fulton made the game’s turning point play — intercepting a pass and returning it 50 yards for a touchdown, giving Newton a 20-13 halftime lead.
Newton extended its advantage in the third quarter when quarterback Hayden Mulvey hit Jacob Oldham for a 49-yard touchdown strike. Lawrenceville’s Coffey added his second rushing score late in the quarter, but the Eagles’ defense stood tall from there. In the fourth, Quincy Fulton sealed the win with his second rushing touchdown of the night, a 26-yard burst.
Defensively, Newton forced three interceptions and recovered a fumble, halting multiple Lawrenceville drives. Dexter Fulton, Ian Kessler, and Grayson Lingafelter each grabbed an interception — with Fulton taking his to the end zone for six.
With a balanced offensive attack totaling 359 yards and a relentless defense, Newton controlled key moments on both sides of the ball to earn the 34-20 victory.
